ICMR Research Highlights Rising Mortality Among Indian Youth with Type 1 Diabetes
26 Sept 2024 • In research conducted in North India, 11.6% of youth with type 1 diabetes succumbed within an average of 6.4 years after diagnosis.
- 43% of these deaths occurred in individuals diagnosed by age 15, with a staggering 75.6% exhibiting poor glycemic control (HbA1C > 10%).
- The findings indicate that 24.2% of deaths occurred within two years of diagnosis, and 53.6% within three years.
- Chronic kidney disease, infections, and diabetic ketoacidosis emerged as the leading causes of death.
These findings highlight an urgent need for better glycemic control and management strategies to combat the escalating health crisis among youth with T1D.
