Study Finds C-Section Births May Hasten Type 1 Diabetes Progression
3 Jun 2024 • Children with type 1 diabetes born via C-section to mothers with type 1 diabetes are at high risk of developing type 1 diabetes that progresses to stage 3.
- This was demonstrated through a study that included 8676 children with a high genetic risk for type 1 diabetes.
- Islet autoantibody development was considered and examined for this study.
- The likelihood of Caesarean delivery was notably higher among offspring of mothers with type 1 diabetes (adjusted odds ratio 4.61).
- While Caesarean delivery itself did not raise the risk of pre-symptomatic early-stage type 1 diabetes, it was associated with a modestly elevated rate of progression to stage 3 diabetes in children with multiple islet autoantibody-positive pre-symptomatic early-stage type 1 diabetes.
These findings highlight the importance of further investigating the impact of birth mode on the progression of type 1 diabetes.
