RAS Inhibitors Before Major Non-Cardiac Surgery: Continue or Cut Off?
2 Sept 2024 • New research examined whether continuing or discontinuing renin-angiotensin system inhibitors (RASIs) before major noncardiac surgery impacts postoperative outcomes.
Involving 2,222 patients, the study found no significant difference in all-cause mortality and major postoperative complications between those who continued RASI use (22%) and those who discontinued it (22%).
While continuation was linked to a higher rate of intraoperative hypotension (54% vs. 41%), it didn’t increase the overall risk of postoperative complications.
These findings suggest that continuing RASIs before surgery may be a safe option, with no added risk of major complications.
