NMC Survey Shows 37,000+ Medics Battling Mental Health Issues

13 May 2024 • In response to a concerning trend of 130 medical students tragically taking their own lives over the past five years, the National Medical Commission (NMC) initiated a comprehensive online survey. The survey aimed to gauge the mental health landscape among medical students and faculty, revealing distressing accounts of anxiety, stress, and other mental health challenges.

Overwhelming responses from 37,000 medical students underscored the gravity of the situation, prompting the NMC to advocate for urgent measures.

The NMC is advocating for crucial changes, including regulated duty hours, suicide prevention programs, and improved student facilities. These recommendations, born from the survey's stark revelations, aim to foster a healthier and more supportive environment within medical colleges nationwide.

These recommendations are set to be presented to the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry this month for nationwide implementation across medical colleges.
