FDA Approves Blood Test for Colorectal Cancer Screening
30 Jul 2024 • The FDA has approved a game-changing blood test for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening in adults 45 and older, making history as the first-ever blood test to be approved as a primary CRC screening tool.
-
This test, which can be done via a simple blood draw during a routine office visit, detects CRC through cell-free DNA alterations. It offers a significant improvement in adherence rates - 90% compared to 28%-71% for other methods.
-
While it doesn’t replace colonoscopies for high-risk patients, the test’s approval is backed by the ECLIPSE study, showing 83.1% detection of CRC and 89.6% specificity for advanced neoplasia.
