Meat on the Menu? Higher Diabetes Risk Says Global Study
22 Aug 2024 • A large-scale meta-analysis of nearly 2 million adults across global cohorts reveals a significant association between meat consumption and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
The study, which harmonized data across diverse populations, found that consuming 100 g/day of unprocessed red meat increases diabetes risk by 10%, 50 g/day of processed meat by 15%, and 100 g/day of poultry by 8%.
The findings were consistent across various populations, suggesting that reducing meat consumption, especially processed meats, could be crucial in lowering diabetes incidence and should be reflected in dietary guidelines worldwide.
