Quit Smoking, But Watch the Weight: New Quitters at Risk for Hypertension with Significant Weight Gain

16 Sept 2024 • Quitting smoking without controlling post-cessation weight gain can nearly triple the risk of developing hypertension, according to a new study.

In research conducted in a working-age male population, new quitters who gained 3 kg or more had nearly triple the odds (OR 2.95) of developing hypertension over a course of 3 years.

Continuous smokers also faced higher odds of hypertension, regardless of weight changes. However, quitters who gained less than 3 kg showed no increased risk, underscoring the importance of managing weight post-smoking cessation to avoid hypertension.
