High Burden of Early-Life Infections Markedly Elevate Childhood Asthma Risk

12 Apr 2024 • As per recent research, a high burden of infections during the first three years of life, particularly colds, pneumonia, gastroenteritis & fever, significantly increased the risk of developing asthma later on.

  • The association between colds & the risk of asthma was stronger in children with allergic rhinitis at age 6.
  • No significant link between acute otitis media or tonsillitis and asthma risk was found.

Strategies to diminish these early-life infections could potentially offer a path for primary prevention of childhood asthma.
