Prediabetes Heightens Susceptibility to Major Adverse Cardiovascular and Limb Events

20 Dec 2023 • Individuals with prediabetes exhibited a significantly increased risk of major adverse limb events (MALE) and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) compared to those with normal glucose regulation.

Examining 36,950 adult patients, the study unveiled that prediabetes, even at lower HbA1c levels, significantly increases the risk of major adverse limb events (MALE) and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE).

Intriguingly, the elevated risks commenced before HbA1c levels surpassed conventional thresholds. Advanced age, male gender, higher BMI, and a history of heart failure or AF were identified as common risk factors.

The study emphasized that complications may manifest at an earlier stage of the prediabetes trajectory, urging for heightened clinical awareness. The findings underscore the critical need for intensive lifestyle modifications to improve the prognosis of severe prediabetes, potentially altering the course of vascular complications.
