Air Pollution Linked to Increased Psoriasis Risk: Study Reveals

17 Jul 2024 • In a groundbreaking study involving over 474,000 individuals, researchers have uncovered a concerning link between air pollution and the development of psoriasis. The research, spanning nearly 12 years, found that exposure to elevated levels of PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and NOx significantly increases the risk of developing psoriasis.

  • For every increase in air pollutant levels within communities, the hazard ratios for psoriasis rose sharply. Specifically, an interquartile range increase in PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and NOx corresponded to hazard ratios ranging from 1.19 to 1.47.

  • Moreover, individuals in the highest quartile of air pollution exposure were twice as likely to develop psoriasis compared to those in the lowest quartile.

  • The study also highlighted significant interactions between air pollution and genetic predisposition. Among White individuals with high genetic risk, exposure to elevated air pollution levels led to a staggering fourfold increase in psoriasis risk compared to those with low pollution and genetic susceptibility.
