Persistent Hot Flashes? They May Signal Early Coronary Atherosclerosis Risk, Says Study
23 Aug 2024 • Severe menopausal vasomotor symptoms (VMS), such as intense hot flashes, are linked to subclinical coronary atherosclerosis, according to a recent study.
In research published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, among 2,995 women aged 50-64, researchers found that those with severe VMS—especially if persistent for over five years or starting before menopause—had a higher likelihood of coronary artery disease as detected by coronary computed tomography angiography.
This risk was more pronounced when symptoms persisted >5 years or when they began before menopause.
These results underscore the potential of severe VMS as a cardiovascular risk marker, particularly with long durations or early onset.
