Indoor Incense Burning Linked to Impaired Lung Function in Diabetic Individuals

7 Jan 2025 • A recent study conducted in China has revealed that exposure to indoor incense burning significantly increases the risk of impaired lung function in diabetic individuals, particularly among men.

The study, which included 376 participants with diabetes and found that 28.6% of those exposed to incense experienced impaired lung function, compared to just 12.9% in the non-exposed group.

A gender-specific analysis showed that men were more affected, with 30% of those exposed to incense suffering from impaired lung function, compared to only 10.9% of non-exposed men. In contrast, the impact on women was not statistically significant.

Multivariable analysis indicated that participants exposed to indoor incense burning had 145% higher odds of impaired lung function.

The findings emphasize the need for further research into the long-term effects of incense burning on lung health of diabetic individuals, especially in those with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
