Factors Beyond Dosage: Large Study Pinpoints Key Risk Factors for Hydroxychloroquine Retinopathy
10 May 2024 • In a recent study of 4677 long-term hydroxychloroquine users, researchers identified significant factors beyond dosage and duration linked to hydroxychloroquine retinopathy risk.
The research, conducted from 1997 to 2020, revealed that increasing age, female gender, chronic kidney disease stage 3 or greater, and tamoxifen use were associated with higher risks of retinopathy. Notably, younger age and male sex were associated with lower risk. Ethnicity also played a role, with Asian and Black patients exhibiting a higher likelihood of pericentral retinopathy.
These insights advocate for tailored dosing strategies and vigilant screening protocols in hydroxychloroquine therapy to mitigate retinopathy risk effectively.
