GDM History Linked to Lower Cognitive Function in Midlife
9 Sept 2024 • Women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) may face greater cognitive challenges in midlife, according to a new study published in Diabetologia.
Out of 15,906 participants, those with GDM had significantly lower scores in psychomotor speed, attention, and global cognition. Even after accounting for type 2 diabetes and other factors, the cognitive deficits persisted, suggesting that GDM may directly impact cognitive health.
These findings suggest the need for targeted research on preventative strategies to mitigate cognitive risks for women with a GDM history.
