GDM and Kidney Health: Severe Metabolic Dysfunction Amplifies Chronic Kidney Disease Risk
16 Dec 2023 • In a comprehensive Danish cohort study spanning two decades, researchers explored the association between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and kidney disease risk in 697,622 women.
- The risk of CKD was significantly elevated after GDM irrespective of subsequent development of diabetes and hypertension.
- The CKD risk was significantly increased in women with insulin-treated GDM and no subsequent diabetes compared with women without GDM.
- Furthermore, the severity of metabolic dysfunction during pregnancy, gauged by GDM diagnosis and insulin treatment, correlated with the highest CKD risk.
These findings underscores the lasting impact of GDM on kidney health, providing crucial insights for maternal and renal healthcare strategies.
