Long-Term Study Confirms: Metformin Use in Pregnancy Safe, No Adverse Neurodevelopmental Outcomes

7 Mar 2024 • A recent meta-analysis with a total of 14,042 children, investigated the effects of maternal metformin use during pregnancy on offspring neurodevelopment.

The study, evaluating children up to 14 years of age, revealed that in-utero exposure to metformin was not associated with neurodevelopmental delays in infancy or at ages 3-5. Moreover, when compared with unexposed peers, metformin use did not show any correlation with altered motor or cognitive scores.

Importantly, the included studies were of high quality and low risk of bias, offering reassurance to clinicians and pregnant women contemplating metformin use.
