Diabetes Patients Undergoing CABG Are at Increased Risk
31 May 2024 • Non-insulin-dependent diabetes patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) within 48 hours of acute myocardial infarction diagnosis are found to be at increased risk of short-term and long-term complications.
- The outcome of the insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients who underwent CABG within 48 hours of myocardial infarction was analyzed (50% were classified as ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) and 20% were in cardiogenic shock preoperatively).
- Non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients were associated with higher postoperative complications.
Hence, the study confirmed that careful evaluation and interdisciplinary action are needed in non-insulin-dependent diabetes patients who undergo coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) within 48 hours of acute myocardial infarction due to the expected risk of postoperative complications.
