Seventh HIV Remission Case At AIDS 2024 Fuels Cure Hopes

A 60-year-old German man with HIV, who had a stem cell transplant in 2015 from a donor with a single CCR5-delta 32 mutation, has remained HIV-free since 2018. Although the donor’s cells weren’t fully immune to HIV, the patient has shown no detectable virus in various tests.

While stem cell transplants are complex and typically used for malignancies, this case boosts optimism for exploring gene editing and other methods to simulate resistant cells and advance towards a broader HIV cure strategy.
