Childhood Asthma Remission Rates Lower Than Expected, New Study Reveals

29 Feb 2024 • In a comprehensive study spanning two decades, researchers tracked a cohort of 3430 individuals with asthma onset at age 8.

Astonishingly, 62% of participants still reported asthma at age 28, challenging the assumption of frequent remission.

Persistent asthma relates to allergic multimorbidity, asthma severity and severe respiratory infections in childhood and bronchial hyperreactivity in adolescence.

Bronchial hyperreactivity at 17 years old increased the likelihood of asthma at 28 years by a factor of 9.

Remission from childhood onset asthma may be less common than previously assumed.
