Treatment With NOACs Safe in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke Receiving Intravenous Alteplase
21 Nov 2023 • Is treatment with non–vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) associated with a higher risk of bleeding in patients with acute ischemic stroke receiving intravenous alteplase?
A recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine has revealed that among patients with acute ischemic stroke receiving intravenous alteplase, treatment with NOACs before stroke was not significantly associated with a higher risk of intracranial hemorrhage or major bleeding events compared to no treatment with NOACs.
Furthermore, the risks of bleeding and mortality were not significantly different between patients treated with NOACs and those treated with warfarin. Treatment with NOACs may be considered safe in patients with acute ischemic stroke receiving intravenous alteplase.
