India Launches 'IMA AMR Smart Hospital' Project to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance
27 Dec 2024 • In a major step to tackle the growing threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has launched the ""IMA AMR Smart Hospital"" project.
- This pioneering initiative focuses on enhancing infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in healthcare facilities across India.
- “A first of its kind globally, the project was designed to address the escalating public health threat of Antimicrobial Resistance through targeted interventions in healthcare facilities across India,” Dr RV Asokan, national president of IMA said.
- With India's alarming antibiotic prescription rate of 412 per 1,000 people, which fuels the rise of resistant pathogens, the initiative seeks to enhance best practices in antimicrobial use.
- The certification program will focus on monitoring AMR patterns, improving stewardship efforts, and preventing the spread of resistant infections.
On December 27, IMA awarded certification to four exemplary hospitals as 'IMA AMR Smart Hospitals', setting new benchmarks for excellence in AMS and IPC. The recognized hospitals include KD Hospital, Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Mahavir Jaipuria Rajasthan Hospital (Jaipur), Sehgal Neo Hospital (Delhi), and Ananthapuri Hospital and Research Institute (Kerala).
