Metformin vs. Insulin for Gestational Diabetes: Similar Cognitive Outcomes at Age 9
4 Dec 2023 • At the age of 9, children born to mothers treated with either metformin or insulin for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) exhibited comparable cognitive & neuropsychological outcomes.
Analyses of cognitive profiles, encompassing measures of verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and processing speed, revealed no significant differences between the groups receiving metformin & insulin treatments.
Additionally, academic performance, measured by reading fluency and educational support received, did not vary between the two treatment cohorts. The findings suggest that cognitive development at age 9 remains consistent, regardless of whether mothers were treated with metformin or insulin for GDM.
