Chronic Viral Hepatitis B and C Infections Linked to Higher Cirrhosis and HCC Risk Than MASLD
19 Feb 2024 • Over a 15-year follow-up study, MASLD significantly heightened the risk of cirrhosis & hepatocellular carcinoma in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) or C infections.
- While MASLD markedly elevated the combined risks of cirrhosis or HCC, the risk was notably higher when comparing CHB or C infection with MASLD.
- Chronic Viral Hepatitis B and C outweighed MASLD in the associated risk of cirrhosis and HCC
- Even among patients receiving antivirals, MASLD remained a significant factor in increased risks of cirrhosis and HCC.
These findings underscore the need to prioritize treatment of chronic viral hepatitis before addressing MASLD.
