Hyponatremia Worsens Postreperfusion Outcomes in Acute Ischemic Stroke

29 Nov 2023 • Admission hyponatremia in patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) and/or endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) was independently associated with unfavorable postreperfusion outcomes, a larger infarct core, and a larger core to penumbra ratio.

Analyzing data from 680 patients, this study found that admission hyponatremia was prevalent in 14% of cases and independently associated with unfavorable outcomes at 3-month follow-up.

These findings underscore the importance of addressing hyponatremia in acute ischemic stroke patients undergoing reperfusion therapies and prompt further exploration into whether correction of hyponatremia could positively influence patient outcomes.
