4 Apr 2023 • Preoperative haemoglobin levels were analysed to investigate their association with mortality in patients after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). A U-shaped correlation was found between haemoglobin level and in-hospital mortality. Lower haemoglobin levels were linked to higher mortality rates in both men and women. Women with haemoglobin levels below 13.4 g/dL had a higher incidence of in-hospital mortality, while men with haemoglobin levels lower than 13.25 g/dL had significantly higher mortality rates. Additionally, women with haemoglobin levels below the reference range had higher 6-month and 1-year mortality rates. The study showed that a simple one-value cutoff is insufficient and sometimes misleading, and that there are clear gender differences in haemoglobin cutoffs and effects. The study concludes that this hypothesis-generating finding needs confirmation with a more detailed analysis in a larger sample size.
