India’s First Diabetes Biobank Established in Chennai: A Game-Changer for Research and Care

16 Dec 2024 • In a major stride for diabetes research, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) have joined forces to establish India’s first Diabetes Biobank in Chennai.

This state-of-the-art biobank is poised to revolutionize diabetes management in India, a country where over 100 million people are affected by the disease. It will facilitate advanced research to develop early diagnostic tools and personalized treatment strategies.

It houses biological samples, including blood and DNA, collected from two large-scale ICMR initiatives - the India Diabetes (ICMR–INDIAB) study, the largest epidemiological diabetes study in the country, and the Registry of People with Diabetes in India with Young Age at Onset (ICMR–YDR), which focuses on early-onset cases.

Dr. V. Mohan, Chairman of MDRF, highlighted the initiative’s transformative potential, stating, “This biobank will help identify novel biomarkers for early diagnosis, improve disease management, and drive the development of personalized therapies.”
