9 Aug 2024 • India is facing its worst Chandipura virus outbreak in over 20 years, with Gujarat being the hardest hit. Health Minister J P Nadda reported 53 confirmed cases nationwide, majority of victims being children and teenagers, 19 of which resulted in deaths, all in Gujarat.
- Symptoms of Chandipura virus infection typically include fever, headache, convulsions, and unconsciousness, progressing rapidly to encephalitis, coma and death in severe cases.
- There is no specific treatment or vaccine available for Chandipura virus infection, so management focuses on supportive care and prevention measures such as mosquito control.
- Children under the age of 15 are the most vulnerable.
