Cognitive Decline After Stroke Tied to Higher Risks of Recurrence and Mortality
9 Sept 2024 • As per new research published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) significantly increases the risk of recurrent stroke and mortality.
Analyzing 27 studies with over 39,000 ischemic stroke patients, researchers found that those with PSCI face a 59% higher risk of stroke recurrence and more than double the mortality risk compared to those without PSCI.
Extensive poststroke neurocognitive assessments are crucial to identify high-risk individuals who may benefit from intensified secondary prevention strategies.
