New Study Finds Cardiovascular Risk Associated with Xylitol!
8 Jun 2024 • Xylitol, an artificial sweetener is associated with major cardiovascular events according to a latest study.
-
Untargeted metabolomics studies on fasting plasma samples of 1157 individuals revealed a potential association between circulating levels of a polyol called xylitol and major adverse cardiovascular events.
-
This association was confirmed in a validation cohort of 2149 subjects using stable isotope dilution LC-MS/MS analyses.
-
Mechanistic studies demonstrated that xylitol enhances platelet reactivity and thrombosis formation in vivo.
-
Interventional studies with a xylitol-sweetened drink showed a significant increase in plasma levels and enhanced platelet responsiveness in all participants. These findings suggest the need for further investigation into the cardiovascular safety of xylitol.
