Fever in Children? Double Up! Combined Therapy Proves Better Than Acetaminophen Alone
26 Sept 2024 • Dual may be superior to single therapies for treating fever in children, according to results from a network meta-analysis involving over 5,000 children.
- Combining acetaminophen and ibuprofen, or using them alternately, was found to be more effective than acetaminophen alone for reducing fever.
- Dual therapies significantly improved the chances of children being afebrile at four hours.
- While high-dose ibuprofen performed similarly to dual treatments, acetaminophen was less effective at both the four and six-hour marks.
- Importantly, there were no significant differences in adverse events across treatment types. This evidence suggests that dual therapy may be superior in managing pediatric fever.
