Breastfeeding Safe for BRCA Carriers After Breast Cancer Treatment, Study Confirms
18 Sept 2024 • Results from an international study on the safety of breastfeeding for BRCA carriers, following breast cancer (BC) treatment, were presented at ESMO 2024, Barcelona, Spain.
Tracking 474 women under 40 diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, the research found no increased risk of cancer recurrence or impact on survival between those who breastfed and those who didn’t. Similarly, breastfeeding did not affect DFS or OS, indicating that breastfeeding is not harmful to the patients’ cancer prognosis or treatment success.
With a seven-year follow-up, the results reassure BRCA-positive women that breastfeeding post-treatment is feasible, allowing them to prioritize both their health and their infant’s needs without fear of worsening their prognosis.
