India, China, and U.S. Lead in Global Depression Rates Among Working-Age Adults
26 Aug 2024 • Depression among working-age individuals (15–49 years) has surged globally from 1990 to 2019, with rising prevalence, incidence, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), according to the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study.
From 1990 to 2019, India saw significant increases in depression cases, with the burden largely driven by population growth rather than changes in the disease's epidemiology.
While overall prevalence increased, especially in the mid-to-late 40s age group, earlier birth cohorts faced greater risks compared to newer generations.
