More Than 4 Cups of Coffee a Day Ups Stroke Risk
19 Jun 2024 • In a large international study, high coffee consumption was linked to an increased risk of stroke, while low to moderate coffee consumption showed no association. On the other hand, tea consumption was associated with a lower risk of stroke.
The study involved over 13,000 participants (mean age = 61.7 years), out of whom 19.4% did not consume coffee or tea, 47% consumed tea, 14.9% consumed coffee, and 18.6% consumed both. The results showed that consuming 4 or more cups of coffee per day was associated with higher odds of all-stroke (OR = 1.7) and ischemic stroke (OR = 1.32). And consuming more tea was associated with lesser odds of all-stroke (OR = 0.81) and ischemic stroke (OR = 0.81).
The study suggests that people should consider avoiding high coffee intake (more than 5 cups per day) to reduce their risk of stroke.
