Decade of Data Shows Hypertension as Major Driver of New-Onset Diabetes in Seniors
3 Oct 2024 • A decade-long study in China found that elderly individuals with high blood pressure are at a significantly higher risk of developing new-onset diabetes (NOD).
Individuals with systolic blood pressure (SBP) consistently above 130 mmHg faced a heightened risk of developing diabetes, with those above 140 mmHg having an 8-fold greater risk compared to those with an average SBP below 120 mmHg.
Significant predictors of NOD included age, gender, baseline hypertension and blood pressure management. Maintaining SBP consistently below 130 mmHg may be an effective strategy to reduce the incidence of NOD in the general elderly population.
