Prostate Cancer Surge in South Asia: Where Does India Stand?

17 Dec 2024 • Prostate cancer incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) have surged across South Asia from 1990 to 2021, with significant increases in India, particularly among men aged 60–65 years.

  • According to data from the Global Burden of Disease study, India saw the highest rise in incidence, with a 61% increase.
  • Pakistan recorded the highest rates of incidence and mortality in the region.
  • Projections suggest a continued upward trend, with South Asia’s prostate cancer incidence expected to reach 9.34 per 100,000 by 2031.

The growing burden of prostate cancer in South Asia highlights the need for enhanced screening programs, public awareness, and healthcare infrastructure improvements. Without intervention, the increasing incidence and mortality rates could strain healthcare resources, emphasizing the urgency of region-specific public health strategies.
