Unveiling the Impact of Weight Changes on Remission in New-Onset Type 2 Diabetes

10 Nov 2023 • Weight loss within the first 2 years of treating type 2 diabetes mellitus was associated with diabetes remission. In a study involving 114,874 Korean adults with new-onset type 2 diabetes, researchers found a strong link between weight loss in the initial two years of treatment and diabetes remission.

Over 20% of these individuals shed more than 5% of their body weight in this period, with 2.1% experiencing diabetes remission. The correlation was clear: the greater the weight loss, the higher the chance of achieving remission.

Physicians should pay more attention to weight management in new-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly for young and obese individuals.
