Large-Scale Type 2 Diabetes Remission Program Delivers Mixed Results in Real-World Trial
6 Aug 2024 • The NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission (T2DR) programme has shown that type 2 diabetes remission is achievable outside clinical trials. The programme included a 12-month weight-loss intervention with an initial 3-month total diet replacement (TDR).
- Of the 1,740 participants who began TDR before January 2022, 55% completed the programme, achieving a mean weight loss of 9.3%.
- Among those who completed the programme, 32% experienced diabetes remission, defined by two HbA1c measurements below 48 mmol/mol without glucose-lowering medications.
Despite promising results, real-world remission rates were lower compared to controlled trials, highlighting the challenges of large-scale implementation.
