Excessive Dietary Sugar Intake Paves the Way for Dementia
20 Jul 2024 • Elevated daily sugar intake, whether in absolute grams or as a percentage of total energy intake, has shown significant associations with heightened risks of both all-cause dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
-
Higher absolute sugar intake (g/day) increased the risk of all-cause dementia by approximately 0.3% for each additional gram consumed and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by about 0.2%. Similarly, each percentage increase in sugar intake relative to total energy intake (%g/kJ/day) was associated with a 31.7% higher risk of all-cause dementia and a 24.9% higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
-
Moreover, a high-sugar dietary score was associated with a higher risk of all-cause dementia (HR = 1.090).
