17 Jul 2024 • Chandipura vesiculovirus has reemerged, claiming the lives of 8 children in Gujarat.

• This pathogen, transmitted by the bite of mosquitoes, ticks, and sandflies, has spread across districts like Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Mahisagar, Kheda, Mehsana, and Rajkot, with 12 reported cases so far.

• Known for its rapid transmission and high mortality rates, the virus targets children aged 9 months to 14 years, predominantly in rural areas. Symptoms start with fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and headache, often leading to fatal encephalitis within 24 to 48 hours.

• Despite ongoing efforts, there remains no vaccine or specific treatment, leaving symptomatic care as the sole option.
