Premature Menopause Raises CVD Risk, But Lifestyle Tweaks Can Turn the Tide
18 Dec 2024 • Women with premature/early menopause are at higher likelihood for CVD.
- According to a large study which followed 46,238 women for over 15 years, women who experienced premature (before age 40) or early (ages 40-44) menopause faced a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared to those who went through menopause between ages 50 and 52.
- However, adherence to a healthy lifestyle- encompassing factors like diet, exercise, sleep, and smoking - was linked to a 23% lower risk of CVD in all women, and a striking 52% reduction in those with premature menopause.
Lifestyle modification was associated with consistent reduction of the likelihood of CVD in women and should be encouraged across the life course.
