One in Eight People Globally are Obese, with Rates in Children Increasing Fourfold in Three Decades

2 Mar 2024 • New study released by the Lancet shows that, in 2022, more than 1 billion people in the world are now living with obesity.

  • The recent WHO report indicates a significant global increase in adult obesity, which has more than doubled since 1990, & adolescent obesity, which has quadrupled.
  • In 2022, there were 2.5 billion adults aged 18 & older classified as overweight, with over 890 million adults living with obesity.
  • The prevalence of overweight, including obesity, in children & adolescents aged 5-19 rose from 8% in 1990 to 20% in 2022.

This new study highlights the importance of preventing and managing obesity from early life to adulthood, through diet, physical activity, and adequate care, as needed,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.
