WHO Reports a Resurgence in Global Malaria Cases

4 Dec 2023 • Global malaria cases reached 249 million in 2022, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 16 million.

The WHO's 2023 malaria report emphasizes a substantial risk of heightened malaria transmission due to global climate change. The deployment of the first WHO-recommended malaria vaccine, RTS,S/AS01, led to decreased severe malaria and a 13% reduction in early childhood deaths in vaccinated areas.

The changing climate poses a substantial risk to progress against malaria, particularly in vulnerable regions. Sustainable and resilient malaria responses are needed now more than ever, coupled with urgent actions to slow the pace of global warming and reduce its effects,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.
