Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: An Early Warning Sign of Rheumatoid Arthritis
9 May 2025 • A population-based study of 2,666 individuals highlighted carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) as an overlooked sign of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Researchers found CTS was more prevalent in RA patients before or at the time of RA diagnosis compared to those without the condition (13% vs. 6%; OR 2.23).
Post diagnosis, RA patients faced a 78% higher risk of developing CTS (HR 1.78). Obesity was a significant risk factor for CTS in RA patients, with a 42% higher risk.
Additionally, seronegative RA patients, particularly those with higher CCP antibody levels, had a higher likelihood of developing CTS (HR 1.79).
Identifying CTS before RA onset could help in early diagnosis and intervention, potentially improving patient outcomes.
