Hypertension's New Ally: Diets Rich in Fruits & Veggies Slow CKD, Lower CVD Risk
6 Aug 2024 • A 5-year study confirms that high fruit and vegetable diets significantly slow chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression and lower cardiovascular disease (CVD) risks better than medication alone in hypertensive patients with macroalbuminuria.
- The trial involving 153 participants compared the effects of fruits and vegetables, oral sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), and usual care over five years.
- Results showed that CKD progression was markedly slower in those receiving fruits and vegetables or NaHCO3 compared to usual care, with fruits and vegetables also leading to lower systolic blood pressure and improved CVD risk indices
These findings support fruits and vegetables as foundational hypertension treatment to reduce chronic kidney disease progression and cardiovascular disease risk.
