Metformin May Shield Seniors from Delirium
7 Oct 2024 • With delirium recognized as a precursor to dementia, effective preventive strategies are critical. A recent study highlights the potential protective effects of metformin against delirium in older adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D).
Analyzing data from over 66,000 seniors, researchers found that those using metformin had a significantly lower risk of developing delirium, with adjusted hazard ratios between 0.77 and 0.81 compared to nonusers.
Notably, a dose-response relationship emerged, indicating that both cumulative and daily higher doses of metformin correlated with reduced delirium risk. These findings underscore the potential of metformin not only as a diabetes treatment but also as a protective agent against delirium in vulnerable populations.
