Alarming Rates of Post-Stroke Depression in Small Vessel Strokes, Women & Diabetics at Elevated Risk
27 Feb 2024 • Having a SVS was associated with an approximate 5-fold increased risk of depression and was more frequent in women and in those with diabetes.
A recent analysis of the American Stroke Association-Bugher SVS Study underscores the heightened risk of depression after small vessel-type stroke (SVS).
Researchers found that 31.7% of SVS survivors experienced post-stroke depression (PSD), a staggering 5.44 times more than controls (6.3%). Notably, women with SVS faced a 1.84 times higher risk of PSD, while diabetes increased the risk by 1.69 times.
