Delay Elective Surgery Post-NSTEMI: New Research Supports a 90-180 Day Wait
31 Oct 2024 • Delaying surgery 90 to 180 days after an NSTEMI in patients who have had revascularization may be reasonable, reported new evidence.
In a study of patients aged 67 and older undergoing elective noncardiac surgeries within 30 days following a non–ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), the results pointed at a 2 to 3 times higher odds of major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) and mortality compared to patients without prior NSTEMI, regardless of whether they had undergone coronary revascularization.
Interestingly, for those who underwent coronary revascularization, these risks leveled off between 30 and 90 days but surged again after 180 days. In contrast, patients without revascularization saw no such stabilization.
The findings suggest that delaying elective surgery for 90 to 180 days post-NSTEMI may significantly improve patient outcomes.
