Optimal Hyperthyroidism Management: Surgery and RAI Outperform ATDs in Cardiovascular Outcomes
5 Mar 2024 • What are the long-term major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and all-cause mortality outcomes comparing the use of antithyroid drugs (ATDs), radioactive iodine (RAI), and surgery to treat newly diagnosed hyperthyroidism?
In patients with newly diagnosed hyperthyroidism at risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), surgery or radioactive iodine (RAI) may be more favorable treatment options than long-term antithyroid drugs (ATDs) use.
In a recent study, surgery exhibited a 24% lower risk of MACE & a striking 47% lower risk of all-cause mortality while RAI was associated with a 55% lower risk of MACE compared to ATDs.
