Salt Substitute Emerges as a Viable Strategy for Hypertension Control

13 Feb 2024 • In older adults with normal blood pressure, replacing usual salt with a salt substitute may reduce the incidence of hypertension without increasing hypotension episodes, as per study findings published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology

  • Upon replacing usual salt with a salt substitute (62.5% NaCl, 25% KCl & 12.5% flavorings) in older adults with normal BP, there was a significantly lower incidence of hypertension (11.7 vs. 24.3 per 100 person-years) compared to the usual salt group, with no increased risk of hypotension episodes.
  • SBP & DBP remained stable in the substitute group, where as an increase was observed in the usual salt group.

These findings suggest a desirable strategy for population-wide prevention and control of hypertension and cardiovascular disease, deserving further consideration in future studies.
