Bariatric Surgery Triumphs in Boosting Fertility for Women with PCOS

21 May 2024 • In recent research published in the journal Lancet, bariatric surgery significantly improved ovulation rates compared to medical therapy in women with PCOS, obesity, and menstrual irregularities.

Conducted with 80 women, the study found that those who underwent vertical sleeve gastrectomy experienced 2.5 times more spontaneous ovulations than those receiving behavioural and medical interventions, with a median of 6 versus 2 ovulations over 52 weeks.

Despite higher adverse event rates in the surgical group (66.7% vs. 30%), there were no long-term sequelae or treatment-related deaths. This suggests that bariatric surgery could notably enhance fertility prospects in this patient population.
